Private vs NHS autism assessment

If you’re considering an autism assessment for your child, you’ve probably already discovered that the NHS waiting list in Northumberland and the North East can stretch to 18–24 months. This guide explains the difference between private and NHS assessments and how to decide what’s right for your family.

What does an NHS autism assessment involve?

NHS autism assessment for children is typically carried out by a Community Paediatrics team, working alongside CAMHS and speech and language therapy services. The process involves an initial referral (usually from a GP or school), a period on a waiting list, assessment appointments and a feedback session. NHS assessments use recognised diagnostic tools and follow NICE guidelines. The clinical quality, when you eventually reach the top of the list, is generally good. The challenge is the wait, and the lack of support during it.

What does a private autism assessment involve?

A private autism assessment covers the same core elements as an NHS assessment, structured observation, standardised diagnostic tools, developmental history and a multidisciplinary discussion, but without the wait. At Speech Stuff, our assessment uses gold-standard tools including the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, in line with NICE guidance.

The key differences are: no waiting list, a more personalised experience, and an assessment that’s embedded within a service that can provide ongoing SLT and sensory support immediately afterwards.

Will a private assessment be accepted by schools and the NHS?

Yes, in almost all cases. Schools and local authorities are required to consider all relevant professional evidence when making decisions about a child’s support needs, including privately commissioned assessments. Our reports follow NICE guidance and are written specifically to be useful for EHCP applications, Annual Reviews and school SEND processes.

Can a private assessment be used for an EHCP?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons families choose private assessment. The EHCP process requires specialist reports, and the local authority has a legal duty to consider all relevant evidence. A high-quality private autism assessment report, written to the standard we provide, is valid evidence for an EHCP application.

What are the advantages of a private assessment?

The most obvious advantage is speed, no waiting list means your child can be assessed, supported and understood now rather than in two years’ time. Early understanding of a child’s needs makes a significant difference to their experience at school and at home. Other advantages include a more personalised process and a joined-up service where assessment links directly to ongoing therapy.

So which should you choose?

If your child is on the NHS waiting list and the wait is manageable, and you’re not urgently seeking school support or an EHCP, it’s reasonable to wait. If your child is struggling now, school is concerned, you’re in the middle of an EHCP process, or you simply can’t bear the thought of waiting two years, a private assessment is worth serious consideration.
